In Twice Born we return to the world of the Water Lovers
of Sirilon by L.E. Bryce. This story picks up eight years after the events
in Dead to the World and features the same main characters.
While Dead to the World world was mostly about Erred,
in this new story Tharril is also a strong main character. The point of
view switches between both characters giving more background information
and insight into both men. Even after eight years Erred and Tharril are
still troubled about their time in Tajhaan and they avoid speaking about
it as much as possible. But when Erred has troubling dreams about the
sacred hrill dying in large numbers he knows he must return to the land
where he was a slave. Tharril will not let him go alone even though they
will be traveling to the place where his only good memory is loving Erred.
He goes to protect Erred but is also still jealous of Erred’s past
relationship with High Prince Thanaj. After they arrive, the situation
becomes grave and the chance of survival becomes slim.
I can’t say enough good things about this book. Twice Born
can be read as a stand alone novel since there is enough back-story for
the reader not to be lost. However for the most enjoyment out of this
book I recommend reading at least the previous novel in the series, Dead
to the World. As with the previous story, I was immediately engaged
from page one and I did not want to stop reading. As I neared the end
of the book I wanted the happy ending but was also sad that the book would
be finished. It was really that good. Ms. Bryce’s writing is wonderfully
descriptive, so much so that I was sure I could feel the heat of the desert
and smell the spicy foods. Her story is complex, the characters riveting
and I enjoyed getting to know them and watching how they dealt with the
challenges thrown their way. This is definitely a story that makes you
feel it not just read it. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end from
all the emotions stirred up in the book. I enjoyed Ms. Bryce’s work
so much I’m going to purchase her other books and you’ll want
to also!
